What's next for Rose:
Well, if you've finished reading A Burnished Rose, you know there is going to be third book in this series. (Don't know yet if there will be a fourth).
Unlike with the first two books, I had a clear goal in my head about what I wanted to write about. Though the details were not there, I knew what I wanted to do, overall.
Book three is not that way for me yet. I have been mulling things over in my mind, and I know how I want to start it, and I know some of the things I will have in it related to the characters, but where it will end up is still a mystery to me, yet.
I'm ok with this. I don't have to know, yet. Many times with my writing, I start to do some research and the story sort of comes to me. I'm thinking that will probably be the case in this instance as well even though this time, it's not just the details of the story I need but the meat of it, so to speak.
Other projects:
As those who know me well know, I can't or don't usually work on just one thing at once, I do have other irons in the fire!
Currently I have two other things I am working on, and I'm quite excited about both.
My first one is something I've been asked to do for someone else. I am writing the memoir of a friend called Willie T. Willie is a recovering addict and alcoholic, and Willie has a very interesting story to tell. Willie grew up in Chicago and has been to prison, I think he said to me, 4 times! He currently lives in Madison.
Writing memoir is new for me, and I've had to do a bit of research on how to do such a thing. But I think I've found “my voice” in the story - that's writers speak for how the story is going to be written, the style, the language…, so now it's just a matter of continuing to meet with Willie and get his story as I write mine for him. It's been a learning experience in so many ways!
The second project has me equally excited. I good friend who is very familiar with the theatrical arts has agreed to collaborate with me in writing a screenplay of A Burnished Rose.
If I thought writing a novel was difficult, from what I've gathered so far in my study of screenplays, this is really going to be interesting for me. It's a totally different medium, writing for the screen, even though as I write, that's how I envision my writing anyway-as if being seen via film. But writing dialogue for a screenplay has to be so much different than a novel. In a novel I can be as verbose and descriptive as I want (within reason), but in a screenplay, every word counts, and frequently the fewer the words the better! Should be interesting for a person who loves her words!
So stay tuned. I'll keep you up on all my projects on this website and more up to the minute on twitter (@cmkbooks) or via my facebook page (www.facebook.com/ckbooks).
